Docu highlights 1996 SF concert
TSG Pictures, the distribution arm of Larry Meistrich’s Gotham indie production company the Shooting Gallery, has acquired worldwide rights to “Free Tibet,” a feature-length documentary about the June 1996 San Francisco Tibetan Freedom Concert.
TSG has pledged to donate the profits generated from the film’s theatrical release to the Milarepa Fund, the nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting nonviolence that was founded by Erin Potts and the Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch.
Directed by Sarah Pirozek and exec produced by Jay Faires and Yauch, “Free Tibet” includes live performances by the Beastie Boys, Beck, Bjork, Foo Fighters, Fugees, Richie Havens, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sonic Youth, the Smashing Pumpkins and others.
TSG Pictures president Eamonn Bowles has decided to release the film in a roadshow manner beginning Aug. 19 in Detroit.
It will open for weeklong engagements in both L.A. and New York on Sept. 11.
On Aug. 21, “Free Tibet” will screen at the Edinburgh Film Festival, where TSG International prexy Steve Bickel will be selling foreign rights to the film.
