MOSCOW — Results of an opinion poll published last week show Russian viewers hungry for nostalgia and domestic product.
In a survey carried out by the Public Opinion polling firm among 1500 respondents across the territory, 57% responded to the question, “Which films do you prefer — Russian- or foreign-made?” in favor of domestic fare, while 8% preferred foreign product. Some 31% expressed no preference, 1% didn’t like either, and 3% refused to comment.
The most popular reason for the choice given by respondents was that domestic pics were closer to Russian life. It was fol-lowed by the explanation that domestic films were “just more interesting.” Only a small number answered that they were already tired of foreign films.
“The paradox is that they are talking about the old, Soviet films whose lack of correspondence to reality as it was then was obvious even to the most inexperienced observer,” commented Izvestiya critic Victor Matizen.”It was a cinema that practically never showed life as it really was, but always as it should have been, or as we wanted to see it.”
