Random House lines up Miramax tell-all

British scribe to spill unofficial version

LONDON — British author and journalist Angus Finney has signed a deal with publisher Random House to write an unauthorized history of Miramax Films.

Titled “Last of the Moguls: The Rise and Rise of Miramax Films,” the book will be published in the U.S. by Random House’s hardback imprint Villard Books and in the U.K. by its subsid Heinemann.

Finney, who previously wrote “The Egos Have Landed” about the defunct Brit film company Palace Pictures, is aiming his latest tome for publication before March 2000.

Miramax co-chairmen Harvey and Bob Weinstein were informed about the proposed book only after the publishing deal was closed March 27.

Although their own book “The Art of Miramax: The Inside Story” is due out this year, published by Miramax Books, Finney is hoping that the brothers will agree to co-operate with him, as did Palace partners Nik Powell and Steve Woolley on “The Egos Have Landed.”

Finney is understood to be receiving just south of $100,000 from Random House, in a deal negotiated by Bill Hamilton at London-based lit agency A.M. Heath.
