Miramax Films has acquired the rights in North America, Spain and Italy to Icon Entertainment’s feature version of Oscar Wilde’s play “An Ideal Husband.”
Oliver Parker adapted the play and will direct an ensemble cast, including Cate Blanchett, Gabriel Byrne, Minnie Driver, Rupert Everett and Julianne Moore, beginning next month in London.
“I can’t imagine a more ideal cast for ‘An Ideal Husband,’ ” quipped Harvey Weinstein, who is a co-chairman of Miramax along with his brother, Bob.
Set in the 19th century, “Husband” is the story of a successful politician whose perfect marriage is endangered when a blackmailer threatens to expose his youthful indiscretions.
Pic is being financed by Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey’s Icon Entertainment Intl. and will be produced by Davey and Fragile Films’ Barnaby Thompson and Uri Fruchtmann. Susan Landau and Ralph Kamp are exec producers.
“Icon and Fragile believe that this is the right home for this film domestically and look forward to a close collaboration with Bob and Harvey and their team,” said Davey.
On behalf of Miramax, the deal was negotiated by Andrew Herwitz, senior vice president for acquisitions and business affairs.
