'Scream' thesp joins Quaid, Caine in compulsive pic
Thesp Jamie Kennedy, noted for his portrayal of horror geek Randy Meeks in “Scream” and “Scream 2,” will add rock star Johnny Chance in “The Debtors” to his collection of quirky roles.
Evi Quaid is writing and directing the independently financed film, which Lawrence Bender and Quentin Tarantino’s A Band Apart Prods. is producing.
Comedy stars Randy Quaid (Evi’s husband), Michael Caine and Catherine McCormack as a trio of compulsive spenders. After joining the same counseling group, the three decide to go on a trip to cure their addiction. Kennedy’s character is one of the oddballs that they encounter along the way.
Phyllis Diller co-stars in the film as Randy Quaid’s grandmother, who sees her grandson blow her pension on the races.
Miramax Films has first-look at distributing the film, which Philip Stewer, Kara Meyers and Evi Quaid are producing. A Band Apart has an overall production deal with the Disney-owned indie.
Pic began shooting in L.A., New York and Las Vegas on Aug. 26.
Kennedy stars in the upcoming Will Smith vehicle “Enemy of the State,” which Tony Scott directed for Touchstone Pictures. He also has a role in Frank Oz’s “Bofinger’s Big Thing,” opposite Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin. Universal Pictures is releasing that pic next summer.
CAA and manager Andrea Pett-Joseph, at Brillstein-Grey Entertainment, repped Kennedy.
