LONDON — Fox Searchlight has extended its Simon Beaufoy franchise by picking up “Among Giants,” the latest film from the “Full Monty” scripter, for distribution in North America, the U.K. and Australia.
“Among Giants” is directed by first-timer Sam Miller from Beaufoy’s original screenplay and stars Pete Postlethwaite and Rachel Griffiths.
The pic is a lyrical romance about a pair of unemployed mountain climbers who team up with an itinerant Australian woman on a rush job painting the giant electricity pylons that stretch across the Yorkshire moors.
Although very different in tone from “The Full Monty” and with a much greater romantic scope, the film has its roots in the same contempo world of post-industrial Sheffield, where men struggle to make a living and find a purpose.
In fact, “Among Giants,” originally titled “The Tower Men,” was the spec screenplay which prompted Uberto Pasolini to hire Beaufoy to write “The Full Monty,” financed by Fox Searchlight. Fox fought off competition from Miramax and Stratosphere for the rights to “Among Giants.”
“Among Giants” was produced by Stephen Garrett of Kudos Prods., and its $3.8 million budget was financed by Capitol Films, the Arts Council of England and BBC Films. It’s a contender for the Directors Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
