PARIS — The venerable Pathe Studios in the north of Paris have been seriously damaged by fire.
The former production facility hasn’t been used for commercial film production for years. Instead it has housed the French film school Femis.
Pathe sold the site to the Paris city administration in January, and an agreement had been signed giving Femis a 20-year lease on the building. Four months ago, the school moved out while a $7.5 million refurbishment program took place.
Sources say that the fire broke out at 10 p.m. Tuesday and took firefighters three hours to bring under control. It appears the origin of the blaze was linked to the current building work.
It is now not clear whether the damage is so extensive that the former Pathe lot will have to be totally demolished or whether Femis will eventually return to its erstwhile lodgings.
