Joins cast of U pic; shooting skedded for Feb. 8 start

James Cromwell, nominated for an Oscar for his supporting role in “Babe,” has joined the cast of Universal’s “Snow Falling on Cedars,” which director Scott Hicks is set to start shooting Feb. 8 in Vancouver.

Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Harry Ufland are producing the pic, based on the bestselling novel by David Guterson, about a racially charged murder trial set in the Pacific Northwest during the post-World War II era.

Cromwell will play a judge in “Snow.” Other screen credits include WB’s “L.A. Confidential,” Par’s “The Education of Little Tree” and upcoming roles in MGM’s “Species II” and Par’s “Deep Impact.”

Pic also stars Ethan Hawke and Max von Sydow. Ronald Bass scripted.

Cromwell is repped by Ro Diamond of SDB Partners.
