PRAGUE — Czech neo-new wave pic “The Buttoners” (Knoflikari) snapped up four awards at the annual Czech Lion ceremony on Feb 28.
Helmer Petr Zelenka picked up director and screenplay Lions, with best film and best supporting actor (Jiri Kodet) also prized. Czech critics likewise tapped the film for their top award.
Four awards also went to Juraj Jakubisko’s “An Ambiguous Report About the End of the World” with four wins, including nods to up-and-comer Klara Issova for best supporting actress and Ondrej Soukup (along with Jiri Jirasek) for best music.
The only other multiple winner was Ivan Fila’s “Lea” whose seven nominations netted two Lions, including best actress to Lenka Vlasakova. Twenty films competed for prizes in 12 categories.
Milos Forman, recently in Prague to receive an honorary doctorate from Charles University, added the award for Contribution to Czech Cinema to his collection. “Breaking the Waves” won the prize for best foreign film.
