Balabanov’s ‘Brother’ redux

Russian helmer readies sequel

MOSCOW — Russian director Alexei Balabanov, whose “Of Freaks and Men” showed in Director’s Fortnight at Cannes last week, is well into shooting a sequel to his hit 1996 thriller “Brother,” according to studio sources in St. Petersburg.

The follow-up, “Brother-2,” charts the progress of gangster hero Daniil Bagrov, played by Sergei Bodrov Jr. — star of Oscar nominee “Prisoner of the Caucasus” — after he leaves St. Petersburg for Moscow, and later America. Action will move between the Russian capital and the U.S., where shooting will go ahead in Chicago and other locations this autumn.

Pic will be produced by St. Petersburg indie studio STV, headed up by Sergei Selyanov, Balabanov’s long-term production partner.
