Altman pic leads exclusives list; 'Kundun' 2nd

Polygram’s “The Gingerbread Man” captured the top slot on the exclusives roster in its first outing. Robert Altman’s screen adaptation of the John Grisham novel baked $118,278 in eight ovens in New York and Los Angeles.

Falling to second place on the list was Buena Vista’s “Kundun.” Martin Scorsese’s Dalai Lama biopic contemplated $61,148 in 10 temples on both coasts.

Sony Classics “Ma Vie En Rose” was the third-most-popular limited-release film. The Belgian gender-bender came out with $43,009 from four closets.

Other newcomers included Sony’s “Slappy and the Stinkers,” which brought home $5,877 on four screens in Gotham and L.A., and Sony’s “Swept From the Sea,” which washed up $29,440 on seven beaches on both coasts.

The following are the weekend grosses of films playing on a limited number of screens in New York and L.A.

Los Angeles

“The Gingerbread Man” (Polygram) bowed with $11,523 at the AMC Century 14, $7,353 at the Mann Criterion 6, $7,336 at the Cineplex Odeon Beverly Center and $6,903 at the Cineplex Odeon Universal City 18.

“The Apostle” (October) surrendered 14% to $9,198 in its second at the Landmark Samuel Goldwyn Pavilion and 10% to $7,942 in its second at the Laemmle Sunset 5.

“Kundun” (Buena Vista) gave up 26% to $4,921 in its second at the AMC Santa Monica 7, 39% to $3,474 in its second at the Mann Regent, 42% to $3,152 in its fifth at the AMC Century 14, 34% to $2,556 in its second at the Cineplex Odeon Marketplace and 61% to $1,940 in its second at the Cineplex Odeon Beverly Center.

“Ma Vie En Rose” (Sony Classics) bloomed 24% to $8,776 in its fifth at the Laemmle Sunset 5 and 21% to $4,730 in its fifth at the Landmark Samuel Goldwyn Pavilion.

“Swept From the Sea” (Sony) debuted with $3,944 at the GCC Avco Westwood, $3,850 at the AMC Santa Monica 7, $2,000 at the Cineplex Odeon Showcase and $1,977 at the Cineplex Odeon Century Plaza.

“The Wings of the Dove” (Miramax) declined 42% to $4,569 in its 12th at the Landmark NuWilshire and 27% to $4,475 in its fifth at the Laemmle Music Hall.

“Afterglow” (Sony Classics) faded 42% to $4,569 in its 12th at the Landmark NuWilshire and 32% to $3,356 in its fifth at the Laemmle Sunset 5.

“The Sweet Hereafter” (Fine Line) dropped 27% to $3,932 in its 10th at the Laemmle Sunset 5 and 26% to $3,715 in its 10th at the Landmark Samuel Goldwyn Pavilion.

“Oscar & Lucinda” (Fox Searchlight) declined 15% to $3,713 in its fourth at the Landmark Samuel Goldwyn Pavilion and 29% to $2,960 in its fourth at the Laemmle Monica.

“The Ice Storm” (Fox Searchlight) gave up 31% to $4,091 in its second at the Laemmle Music Hall.

“The Tango Lesson” (Sony Classics) dipped 9% to $3,701 in its fifth at the Laemmle Royal.

“The Dress” (Attitude) debuted with $3,350 at the Landmark Nuart.

“The Winter Guest” (Fine Line) melted 19% to $3,232 in its fifth at the Laemmle Music Hall.

“Slappy & the Stinkers” (Sony) bowed to $1,579 at the AMC Century 14 and $501 at the Mann Fourplex Westwood.

“Illtown” (Shooting Gallery) bowed to $2,034 at the Cineplex Odeon Beverly Center.

“Mrs. Brown” (Miramax) rose 58% to $1,650 in its third at the Cineplex Odeon Fairfax.

New York

“The Gingerbread Man” bowed to $26,130 at the Cineplex Odeon Coronet, $23,714 at Sony Lincoln Square, $17,830 at the Cineplex Odeon Chelsea and $17,489 at the City Cinemas Angelika.

“Kundun” sank 48% to $12,025 in its fifth at Sony Lincoln Square, 54% to $10,207 in its second at the City Cinemas Village East, 28% to $9,547 in its second at the Cineplex Odeon Chelsea, 44% to $9,136 in its second at City Cinemas 1, 2 and Third Avenue and 37% to $4,190 in its second at the Guild 50th Street.

“Live Flesh” (MGM) dropped 10% to $22,580 in its second at the City Cinemas Angelika and 8% to $18,700 in its second at Lincoln Plaza.

“Ma Vie En Rose” dipped 2% to $16,640 in its fifth at the Quad and 7% to $12,863 in its fifth at Lincoln Plaza.

“Oscar and Lucinda” sacrificed 19% to $8,859 in its fourth at Lincoln Plaza, 24% to $6,820 in its fourth at the City Cinemas Angelika and 23% to $6,495 in its fourth at the Loews 72nd Street East.

“The Sweet Hereafter” declined 30% to $11,527 in its 10th at Lincoln Plaza and 16% to $7,006 in its 10th at the City Cinemas Angelika.

“Swept From the Sea” bowed with $8,313 at the Sony Lincoln Square, $5,181 at the City Cinemas Village East and $4,175 at the United Artists 64th Street and Second Avenue.

“Afterglow” gave up 41% to $7,403 in its fifth at the Cineplex Odeon Regency and 36% to $6,266 in its fifth at the City Cinemas Angelika.

“The Wings of the Dove” faded 35% to $11,138 in its fourth at the Cineplex Odeon 59th Street East.

“The Winter Guest” sacrificed 15% to $9,029 in its fifth at the Paris.

“The Ice Storm” subsided 29% to $6,452 in its fifth at the Quad.

“Illtown” fell 64% to $5,272 in its second at the City Cinemas Village East.

“A Toute Vitesse” (Strand) gave up 41% to $4,576 in its second at the Quad.

“The Dress” shrunk 27% to $4,333 in its second at Lincoln Plaza.

“Slappy and the Stinkers” bowed to $1,432 at the UA Criterion Center and $1,365 at the Cineplex Odeon Waverly Twin.

“Gonin” (Phaedra) rang up $2,784 in its first at Cinema Village.

“Welcome to Sarajevo” (Miramax) dropped 55% to $2,302 in its third at the Cineplex Odeon 62nd Street and Broadway.
