BERLIN — Germany’s answer to Sundance, the 5th Oldenburg International Film Festival, opened Wednesday with “Angel Express,” German director Rolf Peter Kahl’s tale of sex, drugs and techno music in Berlin.

Several U.S. helmers are making their way to the festival in the northern city of Oldenburg, which ends Sunday.

James Merendino will be on hand to present actioner “Punk!,” in which German star Til Schweiger plays a supporting role. Jonathan Gems’ “The Treat” and Jon Jacobs’ “Lucinda’s Spell” will have their world premieres in Oldenburg.

The festival pays tribute to U.S. actor Seymour Cassel, and features a retrospective of the works of Italian director Roberto Faenza.
