Software designer Computer Associates Intl. has acquired Viewpoint DataLabs and 3Name3D in a move that creates the largest library of 3D digital computer graphics models available to commercials, television and film special effects houses.
As part of the deal, Viewpoint, the Salt Lake City-based leader in creating 3D digital objects — from people to aircraft — will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Computer Associates and continue to operate with its existing management team and employees in its Utah, Los Angeles, San Francisco and London offices.
3Name3D, based in Marina del Rey, will merge with Viewpoint.
Neither of the companies would disclose financial terms of the deal, but the deal gives Computer Associates more than 20,000 images in its library.
Viewpoint not only leases its library of thousands of 3D models and 2D rendering technology to f/x houses, but also builds characters for productions, most recently working with Pacific Data Images on DreamWorks’ “Antz.” and with Centropolis on “Godzilla” and “Independence Day.”
Viewpoint has become the exclusive supplier of PDI’s models.
