NEW YORK — Viacom Consumer Products announced on Monday the beginning of a 10-year alliance with Activision that grants the provider of entertainment software the interactive rights to the Star Trek franchise.
The alliance marks Viacom’s first umbrella deal with an independent entertainment software publisher.
“Star Trek” was launched by Viacom’s Paramount Pictures as a television series in 1966 and has since generated three additional TV series. The franchise’s eight feature films have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.
Santa Monica-based Activision said its first Star Trek release will be based on the ninth theatrical release, “Star Trek: Insurrection,” slated to open Dec. 11.
