WNYW taps Sullivan

Exec slides into news director, veep slots

NEW YORK — Susan Sullivan has been appointed news director at Fox Television Stations Group flagship WNYW, replacing Gail Yancosek.

A change was expected (Daily Variety, March 16) following the appointment of Michael Wach as the station’s new G.M. on March 20.

Sullivan, who also takes a VP title, comes to WNYW from the Fox O&O in Washington, D.C., WTTG, where she had served as VP and news director since 1996.

Wach said that Sullivan’s background in news “makes her the ideal person to take Fox 5’s newscasts into the millennium.”

Sullivan will be WNYW’s fourth news director in three years.

WNYW’s news has foundered in the last year, with the station clocking a narrow victory in the 10 o’clock news race against Tribune Co.’s WB affiliate WPIX — a contest Fox had dominated for decades.

Yancosek will continue her duties as VP and executive producer of Fox morning show franchise “Good Day New York” and “Good Day First Edition,” which have shown incremental ratings growth over the last year.
