Prexy to ankle March 31, but will stay on as consultant

Stephen Weiswasser is stepping down as president and CEO of Americast, the telco TV partnership of Disney and four Baby Bells, as of March 31.

Jody Greenstone Miller, executive VP of operations for Americast, has been named acting president and CEO. Weiswasser, a former ABC News exec who joined Americast as CEO in 1995, will continue to serve as a consultant to the L.A.-based partnership of Disney and telcos Ameritech, BellSouth, GTE and Southern New England Communications.

Although the partners pledged their continued support for Americast, Weiswasser’s departure raises questions about the future of the subscription TV ven-ture, designed as a competitor to cable. Tele-TV, another high-profile telco TV partnership launched in 1994, was dismantled last year.

In July, Americast eliminated its programming and marketing departments, handing responsibility for those functions to the individual telcos. Americast officials say the service, available in 80 communities spread across nine states, just passed the 235,000-subscriber mark.
