UPN on Tuesday sealed a deal with NBC sales veteran Michael Mandelker to join the netlet as exec VP of network sales.
Mandelker, who reports to CEO Dean Valentine, replaces senior vice president Perri Stein as head of sales, in charge of the upfront and day-to-day sales in the New York and Chicago offices.
Stein ankled her post shortly after the May upfront sales season, in which UPN’s sales were flat with last year, despite the schedule expansion from three nights to five. UPN’s total upfront take was $135 million to $140 million.
Mandelker, a sales heavyweight, spent 15 years at NBC and is expected to bring new muscle to UPN’s operation. Mandelker began at NBC as an account executive and rose to senior vice president and general manager of Eastern sales in 1994.
During his tenure at NBC, he also worked in daytime and latenight sales, and he had a stint at ABC from 1977 until 1984. Mandelker is expected to begin working at UPN next week.
