TV newcomer takes reins of Argentina’s Multicanal

Marketer Zucchi enters whole new ball game

BUENOS AIRES — TV industry novice Eugenio Zucchi has been named general manager of Argentina’s Multicanal, part of the Clarin Group and the largest MSO in Latin America.

Zucchi replaces Omar Dirrocco, who has been shifted to manage two newspapers recently acquired by Clarin, Argentina’s top media conglom.

Formerly at Unilever and the Bagley foods company, Zucchi’s experience is chiefly in marketing.

The news was met with caution by U.S. cablers, who fear Zucchi’s unfamiliarity with pay TV will further slow down license fee negotiations at a time when rapid industry consolidation is altering the balance of power in the favor of a few major operators.

Three MSOs now control two-thirds of Argentina’s 5 million subs, and Multicanal alone serves 1.7 million homes.
