Symons named development veep after rapid ascension

Producer Mace Neufeld has upped three key development execs at his Par-based production company.

Kel Symons has been named veep of development following a rapid rise to director of development this past summer. He joined the company in September 1997 as story editor.

Additionally, story editor David Engel has been upped to director of development, while intern Jeff Kirschenbaum has been named story editor.

As veep, Symons will head up development for both feature film and television projects.

Symons has been working with Neufeld on the development of several features, including “Sum of All Fears,” the fourth Tom Clancy pic, with Harrison Ford attached to again portray Jack Ryan, and the actioner “Backcountry,” with Arnold Schwarzenegger. In addition, Symons recently brought David Brin’s sci-fi classic “Startide Rising” to the company.

Before joining Neufeld, Engel worked as an indie producer, setting up two feature projects based on the comic books “Goldfish” and “Jinx” at Dimension Films.
