She'll receive Woman of Distinction Award Oct. 1

Joan Hyler, founder of Hyler Management and past prexy of Women in Film, will receive the first Morningstar Commission “Woman of Distinction” Award at a ceremony to be held Oct. 1 at the Century Plaza Hotel.

Sponsored by Hadassah of Southern California., the award honors Hyler for her role in the formation and chairmanship of the Morningstar Commission, established in 1997 to study the portrayals of Jewish women in the media and “to ensure that such portrayals reflect the Jewish woman in all of her complexity and diversity.”

Hyler was a senior veep of the William Morris Agency, where she represented such clients as Candice Bergen, Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol, Peter O’Toole, Rutger Hauer, Diane Lane and many others who later joined her at Hyler Management, which she co-founded with husband, attorney Larry Scissors.

Other honorees include: Dr. Beth Karlan, director of gynecological oncology at the Gilda Radner Ovarian Cancer Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel toys and creator of the Barbie doll.
