In the first visible move reflecting the station’s markedly eroded ratings, KABC-AM (790) program director Dave Cooke is expected to hand in his resignation by Monday, and possibly as early as today.
In a meeting a few weeks ago, the station’s talent was told it is up to them to shoulder the responsibility of raising ratings and that management no longer has a say in the shows, sources said. Talent was told they have until the next ratings book to turn things around. Ratings books are compiled quarterly.
KABC has declined to a 2.6% share of the local market, its lowest rating in three years, according to the latest Arbitron ratings. In the key 25-to-54-year-old demo, shares fell to 1.4% from 1.9% in the previous survey.
The station has just completed extensive research which, after the data has been compiled, is expected to result in a major shakeup or complete dismantling of the Disney-affiliated station.
