Chilean telco ups cable op stake

CTC pays $50 mil for 40% share

SANTIAGO — Leading telco CTC has upped its stake in the Metropolis-Intercom cable operator by buying out fellow shareholder El Mercurio, a newspaper. CTC paid $50 million for the paper’s stake and now holds a 40% share in the MSO, whose other partners are Ricardo Claro (owner of broadcaster Megavision) and the TCI Intl.-controlled Bresnan Intl. Partners.

Mercurio was the founder of Metropolis, which in 1996 merged with Intercom to produce one of Chile’s two dominant MSOs.
