Disney edits ‘Incorrect’ outbursts

GOOD MORNING: Disney would never have permitted a simple bleeping of lines on Tuesday night’s “Politically Incorrect” show, agreed host Bill Maher. Thus, when guest Harvey Fierstein told fellow panelist Mike Reagan “Fuck you and fuck your father (President Ronald R.),” major editing ensued before airing. Another guest panelist, Johnny Lydon (“Johnny Rotten” of the Sex Pistols), called Lynn Redgrave “bitch.” Reagan (Mike, that is) said he received an apology from ABC, but he’s demanding one (in print) from writer-thesp Fierstein. “Those words may not have been on the air,” says Reagan, “but they were heard by everyone there in that audience!” The topics of discussion on the show had been B-52 bomber Lt. Kelly Flinn’s case plus the question, “Do extremists hurt their cause?” Maher told me, “I talked to Harvey (Fierstein) after the show and told him ‘As a friend, you don’t help your cause — extremists don’t help their causes.’ He (Fierstein) disagreed with me. He’s an outspoken gay activist. I think he has hurt his cause.” The discussion on the show leading up to Fierstein’s outburst had followed claims about AIDS aid during the Reagan administration. Maher admitted, “I’m mixing dangerous chemicals every night.” However, he allowed, nothing previous equaled this. “People should not forget the rules about being on TV,” he reminds guests. Redgrave had been talking about the England-Ireland situation; after the show, Maher apologized to the emotionally-moved actress and walked her to her car … Mike Reagan will probably have more to say on this subject on his own radio show. He’s on 150 stations (locally, KLTX, 1390 AM, 3-6 p.m.), but he tells me he’s still demanding that apology. “You can do those kind of shows (‘Politically Incorrect’) without having character attacks” … Mebbe this will give Jay Leno something to ask Bill Maher when the latter heads over to NBC Friday night to guest on “The Tonight Show” — on which Maher must be the first guest in order to be out before his own show starts airing on ABC.

HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD and Hillary. “Hollywood” was the theme of Monday’s program by the Congressional Club (members are the spouses of members and former members of Congress, Supreme Court Justices and the Cabinet). The honoree was the First Lady. The program (including the menu) was all Hollywood-themed. They noted “She (Mrs. Clinton) knows first-hand the excitement and breathless anticipation of being nominated for, and then winning, a major performance award”: She won a Grammy for her audio of “It Takes a Village.” The menu featured “Hollywood & Vine Squash,” “Academy Awards Vegetable Terrine” and “Star-Studded Carmel Bavarian.” The Marine Corps Chamber orch played “The President’s Own”; then, Burt Bacharach and his (two) singers serenaded Mrs. Clinton and the 1,700 ladies in the D.C. Hilton Ballroom with a 24-min. medley of his songs, including “Close to You,” “That’s What Friends Are For,” “Raindrops,” etc. Hillary went backstage afterward to thank Bacharach and to tell him she is a fan. He’d never met her, and has not been at the White House since the Clintons moved in. “Maybe I passed the audition,” he laughed. He played the White House once, for a Reagan State dinner. Bacharach heads to N.Y. to write an album of songs with (fellow Grammy nominee) Elvis Costello and to ready a B’way musical, “Manhattan Girl,” with Scottish lyricist B.A. Robertson. First, Bacharach’s on a worldwide tour … Oscar-winning (three) composer Ray Evans and wife Wynn celebrated their 50th wedding anni at the home of Joan and Fred Nicholas. One of the guests, Allen Livingston, who had attended their wedding here in L.A., had played (sax) in the U. of Penn. band with Ray Evans — and Jay Livingston.

ROY DISNEY HAD TO CANCEL out of the May 29 Big Brothers of Greater L.A. gala honoring him and wife Patty as he is not yet mobile following the auto accident. While the event is canceled, the Disneys are so committed to the Big Brothers, they will match dollar for dollar each contribution that was made and remains with the organization even though the event will not take place. We wish Roy a speedy recovery … One of WB’s longest contractees, Bugs Bunny, gets his own stamp today, on the WB lot, from U.S. Postal Service topper Marvin Runyon. Of course Chuck Jones will be on hand … Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue are celebrating their 17th wedding anni in Bora Bora. On her return, Marlo stars in “Woman in Mind” at the Berkshire Theater Fest. Phil continues to star on golf courses … Wesley Snipes will star in ABC’s two-hour back-door pilot of “Future Sport.” He partners in the project with Ron Ziskin and Dove’s Deborah Raffin and Michael Viner. It’s a violent, action gameshow set in the year 2030.
