Review: ‘The Senior Prom’

The Senior Prom (Wed. (2), 8-9 p.m., ABC) Filmed in Houston and Boston. Executive producers, Louis H. Gorfain, Charles A. Bangert; producer, Hank O'Karma; field producers, Stephanie Granader, Annette Rivlin; directors, Bangert , O'Karma; writer, Gorfain; editors, Victor Zimet, Elizabeth Ackerman, Alexander Gunuey; sound, Fritz Lang. Host: Jennifer Love Hewitt Lighthearted and lightweight, ABC summer spec follows two very different high schools through the ritual that's one of the crowning moments of a high school senior's life: the prom. Producers chose their "cast" well, and even though the "Real World" docu style of non-spontaneity undermines the narrative's credibility, and overly perky host Jennifer Love Hewitt ("Party of Five") --- how can she be anything but perky with a handle like that? --- grates, the kids are spirited and genuine and smart. Overall, "The Senior Prom" isn't a bad way to kill a lazy summer hour. Profiled are Erinn and J.R., who attend the mostly white, middle- and upper-middle-class Clement High School in Sugarland Texas, a suburb of Houston. Contrasted are Roxanne and her friends at Cambridge Rindge and Latin H.S. in Boston's inner city. Spec focuses on the preparation of the prom committees throughout the year, the agony of securing a date and the agony of being a teen, which crosses all socio-economic borders. One thing is true: Pre-prom, Roxanne, Erinn and all their friends look like lovely teenage girls, but on the night of the prom, they transform themselves into what seem to be 35-year-old self-employed models. Welcome to the '90s.
