On Tour

On Tour (Sat. (7), 12-1 a.m., PBS) Filmed in Vancouver, B.C.; London, Ontario; Buffalo, N.Y.; Minneapolis; and Los Angeles by Sunshine TV in association with KCET/Southern California. Producer, John Diaz; co-producer, Rob Tonkin; executive producer, Tim Nye; associate producer, Linda J. Kaner. Concert performances director, Matthew Amos; segment director, Brett Morgan; production coordinator/art director, Sharon Beeching. Performers: Sting, Steve Earle, Nil Lara, Amanda Marshall. The proliferation of music performance shows forces each to attempt to make an identifiable stamp. "On Tour" goes for quantity at every turn --- the number of acts, the number of cameras, the number of quick cuts --- which make this ambitious series a bit disconcerting to watch at times. Once again, it's proof that compelling rock 'n' roll television is reliant upon dynamic performers. Episode one covers the famous (Sting), the recovering (Steve Earle) and a pair of who-dats (Nil Lara and Amanda Marshall). The first 13 of the 26 episodes were filmed last summer and spring, and for the young acts (Marshall, Satchel, Psychotica, etc.), this could be an unfortunate reminder of albums that went nowhere. Sting, who is captured from every possible angle for a second or two, and Earle are at least seen performing known songs. Show visits with peripheral personalities, predominantly the bus driver, and bands to provide a few flat insights about life on the road, though the ever-thoughtful Sting does make some valid points. Clips of the TV production team show the unit as a bunch of goofballs with minimal knowledge of music. Opening and bumper footage are corroded and grainy, picking up on the Raygun magazine graphic style that should somehow be carried through rest of the program. Upcoming shows chronicle a variety of last year's package tours --- Smokin' Grooves, HORDE, Lollapalooza, Reggae Sunsplash and the Further Festival. AU: Phil Gallo
