“The View” on day one of Barbara Walters’ new ABC daytime strip looked like a 2.4 household rating and 9 share, according to Nielsen’s metered market survey.
ABC’s replacement for the low-rated talkshow “Caryl & Marilyn” features Walters and three co-hosts — ABC News’ Meredith Vieira, lawyer/commentator Star Jones and recent college grad Debbie Matenopoulos — mixes discussions of headline issues with celebrity interviews and other feature segs. Tom Selleck was the featured guest Monday on the show’s debut.
According to ABC, day one of “The View” out-rated the July average of “Caryl & Marilyn” by more than 41%, but many in the biz expected Walters to draw more sampling on the first day. Walters is expected to appear on the show twice a week on average, replaced on other days by standup comic Joy Behar.
First-day ratings data for “The View” were based on reports from 27 of Nielsen’s 38 overnight metered markets. Airing on WABC New York at 11 a.m., the 2.9/10 rating for “The View” was down 55% from its “Rosie O’Donnell” lead-in of a 4.5/17. At 10 a.m. on KABC Los Angeles, “The View” scored a 3.5/12, building on its “Live With Regis & Kathie Lee” lead-in rating by 25%.
