Tyro thesp nabs mini role

Fifteen-year-old Megalyn Echikunwoke will make her professional acting debut as the young female lead in the forthcoming four-hour ABC miniseries “Creature,” based on the Peter Benchley novel “White Shark.”

Echikunwoke — who has both African-American and Native American blood and was raised on an Indian reservation in Arizona — was discovered by casting director-turned-manager Ira Belgrade while she was appearing in a play at camp. Belgrade brought her to the attention of Trilogy Entertainment, which is co-producing “Creature” with MGM.

“Megalyn was just so special and poised, so natural, that her experience didn’t matter,” said Trilogy casting associate Stacey Pianko.

The mini stars Craig T. Nelson and is skedded to begin production next week in St. Lucia and Vancouver. It’s tentatively penciled in for a February premiere on ABC.
