Katey Sagal, who played Peg Bundy in one of TV’s longest-running sitcoms, “Married … With Children,” has inked an exclusive two-year deal with CBS to develop a new series for the Eye web, sources said.
The series, probably a sitcom, could be on the air by fall 1998, but details of the project won’t be discussed for a week or so. The deal also calls for Sagal to appear in movies of the week.
“Married … With Children” recently wrapped its final season on Fox Broadcasting Co. after a 10-year run. The show, and the controversy it created, helped put Fox on the map when it was just a fledgling network.
Because Fox and CBS have very different audiences, it seems unlikely that Sagal’s new series would be in the same vein.
In addition to “Married,” Sagal has starred in several movies of the week, including NBC’s “Trail of Tears” and “She Says She’s Innocent.” She’s also appeared in films such as “The Good Mother.”
Sagal began her career in theater, spent several years as one of Bette Midler’s backup singers, called the Harlettes, and in 1994 recorded an album for Virgin Records called “Well.”
The deal was brokered by Bernard Carneol and Belle Zwerdling at Progressive Artists Agency, and Michael S. Sherman of Jeffer, Mangels, Butler & Marmaro.
