BERLIN — German weblet RTL2 has acquired a package of films and series worth 200 million marks ($115 million) from RTL, Germany’s No. 1 commercial network.
The deal includes pics which had their first run on RTL, such as “The Silence of the Lambs” and “Robocop.”
According to RTL2 managing director Josef Andorfer, the weblet’s shareholders want the money-losing channel to reduce costs by cooperating more closely with RTL.
Co-production projects between the two webs are being discussed.
CLT-UFA owns 89% of RTL, but has a stake of only 33% in RTL2. The weblet’s remaining shareholders, including Tele-Munchen and Bauer publishing house, have so far resisted attempts by CLT-UFA to draw RTL2 into a holding structure headed by RTL.
