Rosie + Barbra = show’s rating high

Streisand a hit on talkshow

With Barbra Streisand in tow, “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” hit its highest note yet Nov. 21.

Friday’s edition of the syndie “Rosie O’Donnell” averaged a 10.2 household rating and 26 share in Nielsen’s 38 overnight metered mar-kets. The show’s previous record high was set Dec. 10, 1996 when a visit from Tom Cruise powered “Rosie O’Donnell” to an 8.9/26 in the metered markets.

Not surprisingly, Warner Bros.’ “Rosie O’Donnell” ranked as the nation’s most-watched talkshow Friday, placing first in its timeslot in 26 of the 38 metered markets. Warner Bros. also reported that the hour with Streisand (who was joined for the final 15 minutes by fiance James Brolin) qualified as the highest-rated episode of any daytime series, network or syndication, for the 1997-98 season thus far.

But the number that really made jaws drop Monday was 47 — the audience share “Rosie” pulled in at 10 a.m. on WABC New York, along with a new all-time high household rating, a 14.9.

“Rosie O’Donnell” also set a new high mark in L.A., where she creamed the competition at 3 p.m. on KNBC with a 10.8/29. By contrast, direct competitor “Oprah Winfrey” on KABC hit a two-year low (2.4/7) with an episode featuring Clint Eastwood.
