Viewers of Tuesday’s episode of the DreamWorks Television-produced ABC comedy “Spin City” probably thought they were getting a new show when the opening scene featured a conversation about the upcoming Super Bowl matchup between the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots. But it was not to be. While the opening was new, the show was a repeat from last fall. The reason for the new opening was not to trick viewers or be more timely, but rather to cut out scenes that featured Carla Gugino, who until last month had portrayed Fox’s love interest in the show. Gugino left the show after she and the writers agreed that her character had little room to grow on the show. Since the show only recently started dealing with her departure, DreamWorks did not want to confuse viewers by having her pop back up in an episode without explanation, even if the show in question was a repeat. Of course, now when the show airs in repeats it may look even more dated, begging the question as to whether the episode will get a third new opening.
