TOKYO — Japanese direct satellite platform PerfecTV is planning to ask commercial networks to set up a joint venture for broadcasts of their programming, a Japanese national daily reported Monday.
The Yomiuri Shimbun said PerfecTV would work with Japanese networks to broadcast their programming in a digital format via a broadcast satellite.
The paper said the PerfecTV platform would be millions of dollars cheaper for broadcasters to use than a next-generation broadcast satellite that will be launched in 2000.
Japan plans to launch its first digital-format broadcast satellite, BS-4, in 2000. Japan’s four commercial networks and pubcaster NHK are expected to have at least a channel each on the new satellite.
