NBC boosts Sat. teen scene

NEW YORK — NBC is expanding its Saturday morning teen schedule to three hours this fall to satisfy the FCC’s kidvid requirement.

In 1992, the Peacock web abandoned traditional animated fare in the daypart in favor of a teen-targeted block, dubbed TNBC, that’s done reasonably well in the ratings, especially among teenage girls.

Starting in September, the block will begin a half-hour earlier, at 9:30 a.m., with NBC adding a second run of sports comedy “Hang Time” and an entirely new series, “City Guys,” described as a buddy comedy pairing two teen boys, “a street-smart African-American from Harlem” and “a fast-talking, preppy Anglo kid from Park Avenue.” “City Guys” is produced by Peter Engel Prods. in association with NBC Enterprises, and replaces Engel’s musical-comedy “California Dreams,” which leaves the sked after five seasons.
