The June 12 telecast of the pre-taped “1997 MTV Movie Awards” earned the event’s highest ratings since it debuted in 1992: a 3.9 rating/6 share in households, representing an estimated 2.6 million homes.
The show, hosted by Mike Myers, naturally fared even better with MTV’s target 12-34 demo, capturing a 4.4/14 — a 74% increase over the year before. Among those aged 12 to 17, the awards snared an impressive 8.3/30.
MTV is also pointing out that having Myers front the show and shamelessly plug his current film “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” helped fuel a mild surge in the movie’s box office fortunes last weekend. It took in just over $2 million, a modest dip of 12% from the previous weekend, and rose from 7th place to 5th.
