Screenwriter Robert King, whose credits include “Clean Slate” and “Speechless,” will make his directing debut on the Disney telefilm “The Principal Takes a Holiday” for ABC.

The project is about a group of high school students who discover their replacement principal is unable to take the position and hire their own surfer bum to take his place. The pic, which goes into production on July 1, will be produced by Neil Meron and Craig Zadan of Storyline Entertainment.

Kevin Nealon and Zachery Ty Bryan will star. Paul Wolff wrote the script and King did a rewrite.

King has crossed several genres so far in his career, starting with horror pics and actioners for Roger Corman. He also wrote “Red Corner,” which is currently in production for MGM and stars Richard Gere. Jon Avnet directs. His script “Vertical Limit” is set up at Phoenix Pictures, with Stuart Baird attached to direct.

King’s deal was made by Lucy Stille of Paradigm.
