“Jerry Springer” is about to be sprung in daytime in L.A.
Starting Monday, KCAL-TV will add a second run of the red-hot Universal TV talkshow weekdays at 9 a.m. KCAL has been doing boffo business weeknights at 11 p.m. with “Jerry Springer” originals in recent months. The 9 a.m. airing will be a three- to four-week-old rerun.
Love him or hate him, syndie biz watchers can’t deny that the oft-criticized talker is on a real roll this year. Nationally, he’s even close to catching up to “Rosie O’Donnell” as the No. 2 daytime talker behind “Oprah Winfrey.” Last week in Atlanta, Springer actually beat Winfrey in head-to-head competition, with Jerry averaging a 10.2 household rating and 26 share for the week to Oprah’s 8.8/23.
What’s more, “Jerry Springer” hit a new all-time high across Nielsen’s 38 overnight metered markets last week with a 4.6/16 average. The hottest show of the bunch? Friday’s, when the talker scored a 5.9/19 in the metered markets by providing a forum for “guests who appear to be female reveal they are really male to their loved ones.”
