Euro decoder deal

World Brief: Holland

Germany’s Deutsche Telecom, Sweden’s Telia InfoMedia TeleVision, and Holland’s two largest cable operators Casema and Mediakabel have agreed on a digital decoder standard.

The companies operate 50% of all European cable connections. The agreement was negotiated by ECCA, an association of European operators with 21 members in 14 countries.

Euro 7 is deep-6’d

Dutch environmental and scientific channel Euro 7 has gone belly up after some 2-1/2 years in operation. It follows on the heels of sports niche Sport7, which went bankrupt last December after just four months in operation. The Dutch market is experiencing intense pressure as a glut of channels, many of them launched over the last two years, scrap over TV ad revenues that are leveling off.
