Encore Media Group has expanded its agreement with Miramax to include a commitment to take all Miramax label titles on an exclusive basis, boosting the overall number of firstrun titles airing on EMG’s premium movie channel Starz! by some 20%.
Previously, the company had been airing only the top 15 titles on an exclusive basis. With the enhanced agreement, EMG commits to take 30 to 40 Miramax films per year exclusively.
“This agreement allows us to be much more aggressive in our program buying and scheduling,” said Stephen Shelanski, VP, program acquisitions, for EMG. “Overall, it will provide a tremendous boost in our roster of firstrun movies for all of our channels.”
Besides Miramax and Hollywood/Touchstone — with whom EMG signed a multimillion-dollar library licensing agreement for the rights to 130 of the studios’ films —EMG has output deals with Universal, New Line, Fine Line and Imagine.
