Discovery finds top ratings in ‘Planet’

NEW YORK — The Discovery Channel, frequently characterized as the network that people seldom watch even though they tell survey-takers they love it, scored the third-highest rating in its history at 9 p.m. on Aug. 17 with “Raging Planet,” the first installment of a 10-part series on natural disasters.

The two hours of “Raging Planet,” which focused on tornadoes and hurricanes, averaged a 3.8 rating in cable homes, chalking up a 3.1 rating among adults 25 to 54. “Planet” ran during Discovery’s 10th annual “Shark Week” of documentary programming (Aug. 10-17), which averaged a 1.56 rating for the seven days, the network’s third-highest weekly primetime rating ever.

Discovery’s two previous highest-rated individual programs were “Titanic: Anatomy of a Disaster,” which hit a 4.5 rating on April 13, and “Carrier: Fortress at Sea,” which premiered March 5, 1995, with a 4.0 rating.
