Satcaster DirecTV will add the struggling CBS Eye on People cable service on July 24, instantly nearly doubling the news/entertainment network’s subscriber base, said to stand at about 3 million.
The deal puts Eye on People in 2.6 million DirecTV homes, bringing its penetration to about 5.5 million. It’s being added to all five of the direct broadcast satellite provider’s core packages.
There had been recent talk that Eye on People has been such a colossal bust since its March 31 launch that CBS would consider disbanding it toward the end of 1997. It has failed to move off its initial announced number of subs. However, the DirecTV deal gives the network something resembling momentum for the first time.
