CBS slot-swapping

"Dellaventura," "48 Hours" to change places

NEW YORK — CBS is swapping timeslots of “Dellaventura” and “48 Hours,” hoping that more compatible lead-ins will improve performance on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Effective Dec. 2, the newsmag will take “Dellaventura’s” 10 p.m. timeslot, removing “48 Hours” from a head-to-head duel with ABC’s “20/20” on Thursday but putting it instead against “Dateline NBC.”

“Dellaventura,” the Gotham-lensed crime drama starring Danny Aiello, will move to Thursdays on Dec. 4, where it will follow the older-skewing “Diagnosis Murder” and provide an alternative to “ER.”

Neither show is doing especially solid numbers season-to-date, with “48” averaging a 7.1 rating and 12 share, and “Dellaventura” a 7.6/13 in households, still making it the third-highest-rated new drama. But “48” will compete for a larger available audience of the core newsmag demo on Tuesday nights. CBS News execs aggressively lobbied for the change, hoping to give “48” — which has twice beaten “20/20” on Thursday nights — a stronger shot at sur-vival.

But “Dellaventura” is not expected to ride out the season. CBS ordered three more episodes beyond the initial 13, and absent improvement in its tough new timeslot, the show may be replaced by January. Ann-Margret drama “Homestead” is a leading candidate for the time period.
