CBS close to naming Gumbel producer

Bryant Gumbel’s new CBS newsmagazine doesn’t have a title yet, but the Eye web is close to naming an executive producer for its new $5 million-a-year news star. After passing on outside candidates, CBS has narrowed its search to a handful of its own producers, led by Michael Rubin, exec producer of the short-lived “Coast to Coast” magazine show, and Jeff Fager, exec producer of the “CBS Evening News with Dan Rather.”

A final decision is expected early next week. Still other aspiring Gumbel-ites are Al Berman, who produces CBS cable web Eye on People’s “Off 10th”; Rand Morrison, the No. 2 producer at “48 Hours”; and Jim Murphy, who oversees CBS’s “This Morning.”
