Using every trick available, from talking babies to digitally enhanced fireballs, advertising agencies recently have found themselves reaching for movie-like magic at movie-like prices for 30-second commercials.

To realize these nifty and expensive wannabe Clio winners, the creative execs behind the scenes have jumped headfirst into a talent pool that has grown stronger during the past several years.

Helmers including Michael Bay (“The Rock”) and Joe Pytka (“Space Jam”) have crossed the line into feature films while keeping one foot firmly planted in the advertising world (Pytka recently won an Emmy for HBO’s “Chimps” spot).

Also included on the “hot” list are Samuel Bayer (Packard Bell’s “Home”), the single-monikered Tarsem (Levi Strauss’ “Wasted”), Kinka Usher and Mark Gustafson (Nissan’s “Toys”) and Joe Johnston (Saturn EV1’s “Appliances.”)

These innovative directors have mixed ’90s hipness with cutting-edge visuals and often provide viewers with the best entertainment TV has to offer.
