Veteran L.A. anchorman Jerry Dunphy will return to KCAL in October.

There’s no decision yet on which newscasts Dunphy will anchor, according to KCAL news director Dennis Herzig. Earlier this month, KCAL tapped a new female anchor, Terri Merryman, and Herzig says there’s a “definite possibility” that the station will add another newscast to its schedule. At present, KCAL programs news at noon, 2 p.m. and in primetime.

Dunphy, who’s been a fixture on the L.A. news scene since 1960, spent five years with KCAL before leaving for a three-year deal with KCBS in January 1995. He left KCBS under a cloud in March 1996 when the station scrapped the 4 p.m. newscast he had been anchoring (Daily Variety, March 19, 1996). Dunphy’s return to KCAL coincides with the expiration of his lucrative $1.25 million-per-year contract with KCBS.
