Alliance Communications Inc. has acquired the 20% interest in Showcase Television held by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., raising its stake in the specialty channel to 95%.
Key to the deal is Alliance’s continued supply arrangement with Showcase, which served as a second window for CBC programming.
Alliance said it wants to consolidate its ownership in Showcase to take advantage of the synergies between Showcase and the History and Entertainment Network, its newly-licensed specialty channel skedded to launch in September.
The CBC was the second-largest shareholder in Showcase. Earlier this month, Alliance bought out Les Productions La Fete and other shareholders, which brought its stake to 75% from 55%.
