ZDF to supply DF1 with PI shows

BERLIN — German pubcaster ZDF will supply Munich-based digital pay TV web DF1 with detective shows starting this fall.

Repeats of ZDF German-lingo productions such as “Derrick” and “A Case for Two” will be broadcast on the Krimi & Co. channel, one of 25 specialized channels on the DF1 digital platform launched in July by media mogul Leo Kirch. ZDF Enterprises and Taurus Film, a member of the Kirch Group, are forming a joint venture called Krimitel, which will be responsible for Krimi & Co. programming.

DF1 currently draws most of its movies and series from Leo Kirch’s extensive film library and from pay TV output deals with Hollywood majors. DF1 managing director Gottfried Zmeck stresses however, that the web is willing to consider offers from other programming suppliers. “Our cooperation with ZDF demonstrates that DF1 is open to working with partners interested in the future-oriented field of digital television,” Zmeck said.

Family for sale

According to Peter Lang of ZDF Enterprises, the pubcaster also had been in negotiations with CLT-UFA’s Club RTL digital pay TV channel bouquet before Club RTL was abandoned during the planning stages last fall. “We would consider selling some of our productions, especially in the area of family entertainment, to another digital pay TV network,” Lang says.
