NEW ORLEANS — The Rupert Murdoch-Ted Turner wars continued at the Fox affiliate confab Saturday, with News Corp. topper Murdoch and several of his lieutenants taking shots at the Time Warner vice chairman. The argument stems from News Corp.’s claim that Time Warner Cable, fearing competition to CNN, backed off from a deal to carry Fox News in New York City.
“I am more than a little worried about my friend Ted Turner’s blood pressure,” Murdoch said. “Ted likes to say that since he is 10 years my junior, he will have 10 years of peace after I’m gone. To that I say, ‘Dream on, Ted! I couldn’t possibly deprive you of the pleasure of my company.’ ”
Fox TV and Sports president David Hill also took some shots at Turner and wife Jane Fonda, some funnier than others.
“It’s 1997 already, and everyone is talking about those two moronic cartoon characters traveling across America saying stupid things. But we’re not here today to talk about Ted and Jane.” Hill added that the company has nothing against Ted, although the Turner exec “was seen in a New Orleans restaurant ordering blackened catfish — and then asking the waiter if he could have it colorized.”
