Sydney stocking up on megaplexes

SYDNEY – Megaplex mania is catching on Down Under with the unveiling today of plans for Sydney’s third giant multiplex. Village Roadshow and partner Greater Union said they will develop a 20-screen, 4,124-seat cinema at the Westfield shopping center in Parramatta, due to open in December.

This will be Sydney’s third megaplex, on the heels of Greater Union’s 20-screener in Liverpool and Village’s 20-screen site in Bondi Junction. The new Parramatta venue will be linked to the existing Village eightplex in the mall. Village Nine Leisure, a co-venture between Village and Kerry Packer’s Nine network, simultaneously announced plans to redevelop its Intencity interactive games center, which forms part of the Westfield Parramatta entertainment precinct.

A Village spokesman said the Intencity would be downsized and more emphasis placed on coin-operated games plus the Wide World of Sports attractions.
