Antonio Banderas is attached to produce “The Sparrow” with Addis-Wechsler and Associates through his Green Moon Prods.; he also will star in the pic.

The co-production will be produced by Addis-Wechsler’s Nick Wechsler and Julia Chasman, along with Green Moon’s Diane Sillan.

“The Sparrow” is being adapted by Jason Rothenberg from the recent novel by Mary Doria Russell (Daily Variety, Jan. 20). Geoffrey Wright (“Romper Stomper”) is attached to direct.

Pic is a futuristic thriller recounting the travails of Father Emilio Sandoz, a Jesuit linguist who becomes the sole survivor of a secret expedition to the planet Rakhat and detects signs of intelligent extra-terrestrial life.

While “The Sparrow” is not currently set up anywhere, Addis-Wechsler has a first-look deal with Universal and a second-look pact with Phoenix Pictures.

Addis-Wechsler, a Hollywood-based management and production company, also optioned the rights to Russell’s upcoming novel “Children of God,” slated to be published by Villard next year.

Banderas is represented by Emanuel Nunez and Rick Nicita of CAA.
