Sci-Fi Channel looses Lynch on promos

Director David Lynch has been signed to produce and direct a worldwide TV image campaign for cable’s Sci-Fi Channel that will debut in the U.S. in July, utilizing commercial spots on local broadcast TV as well as cable for the first time.

The renowned director of “The Elephant Man,” “Eraserhead” and “Blue Velvet,” who co-created (with Mark Frost) the ABC drama “Twin Peaks,” will direct and produce four spots as part of the new Sci-Fi campaign created by Mullen Advertising of Wenham, Mass.

Those ads are called “Nuclear Winter,” “Dead Leaves,” “Rocket” and “Aunt Droid.”

Campaign will break during the summer in the U.S. and then roll out to Europe and Latin America throughout the balance of 1997 and ’98. The channel’s earlier brand campaign, called “Welcome to the Edge,” was created in 1994 by Lynch’s daughter Jennifer Chambers Lynch.

“We are extremely fortunate to have the talents and unique perspective of David Lynch,” said Andrew Besch, senior VP of marketing for USA Networks. “He is certainly the best director to communicate how science- fiction stimulates viewers’ curiosity about the thought-provoking possibilities in the universe around them.”
